Cricket Dreams is the inspiring story of nine former street-connected children from Delhi who seize a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete in the Street Child Cricket World Cup in Chennai, India. Throughout their incredible journey, they experience things they never thought possible, discover parts of India they’ve never seen, and forge friendships with children from around the globe. Through the cricket tournament, an arts program, and a conference on child rights, they gain a platform to raise their voices, share their stories, and advocate for other street-connected children worldwide.
Nineteen teams from fourteen countries across four continents came together in Chennai for the second edition of the Street Child Cricket World Cup, united by a single goal: to make the ‘invisibles’ visible. The cricket played was of a high standard, and the competition was fierce, yet the spirit of the game shone through, characterized by friendship, camaraderie, and respect.
According to the United Nations, there are over 100 million street-connected children worldwide who rely on the streets for survival. Life on the streets is fraught with danger. Instead of receiving the support they need, these children are often blamed for their circumstances and face significant stigma. Consequently, they endure violence and abuse. While they are vulnerable, they also exhibit remarkable resourcefulness and resilience. However, they are frequently denied the opportunities necessary to realize their full potential.
The Street Child Cricket World Cup harnesses the power of cricket to raise awareness and combat the stigma surrounding street-connected children, inspiring countries, governments, and communities to better protect, respect, and support these vulnerable youth around the world.
